Stanley DeLong

DeLONG, STANLEY OWEN
The death of Stanley Owen DeLong occurred at the Veterans Health Unit on Friday, December 11th, 2015, in his 100th year. Born on October 25, 1916, in Charleston, N.B., Stanley was the son of the late George and Eva (Ketch) DeLong, of Charleston, Carleton County, NB.
The most important thing in all of Stanley’s life was his family; he was deeply devoted to his wife Marie and to his children. He did not allow his lack of formal education keep him from providing for his family, and he worked hard all his life. He worked hard on the home farm, in the army, on a roofing crew, at carpenter work, and at laundry plants including the one at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Stanley served in the military during the war years; he was a first-class cook with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, and he learned to cook for big crowds. This was evident when he would prepare Christmas dinners that would make the table groan. He had a good appetite himself, something that he maintained up until the final weeks of his life, according to the staff at the Veterans Health Unit. Stanley and Marie were avid yard sale attendees, and their house on Carney Street was overflowing with items that they picked up and added to their collection. If you ever saw it, you would never forget it.
Stanley is survived by his eight children, Donna Whitlock (Allan) of Fredericton, Donald DeLong (Sandra) of Fredericton, Walter DeLong (Kathy) of Miramichi, Judy MacIntosh (Jim) of Hampton, Margaret Peterson (and special friend D.J.) of Miramichi, Clifton DeLong (Mary) of Fredericton, Ralph DeLong of Fredericton, and Jerry Delong of Fredericton; 23 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Marie Ella (Rosborough) DeLong; brothers, Elmer, Earl, Wendell, and Lloyd; sisters, Florence, Ruth, Alma, Azlee, Thelma, and Jessie; and daughter, Pauline. He was the last surviving member of his family.
Visitation will be held at McAdam's Funeral Home on Monday, December 14th, 2015, from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm, followed by a funeral service in the J. A. McAdam Memorial Chapel with Mr. Jim MacIntosh officiating. A tribute by The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #4, will be held prior to the service at 2:00 pm. Interment will take place in the Sunny Bank Cemetery at a later date.
