McCARTHY, JAMES
James Timothy McCarthy passed away peacefully in his 101st year, at the Glebe Centre, Ottawa, on December 18, 2015. Jim was the fourth of seven children born to Ned (Edward) McCarthy) and Etta (née Henrietta Kelly) in Saint John, NB.
Predeceased by siblings John, Bernard, Edward, Fred, Eileen and Alice.
Survived by Margaret, his wife of 70 Years, children James (Jean), John, and Elizabeth Dooley (Joe), grandchildren Deirdre,Suzanne, Margaret, Tom, Edward, Conor, Jessica and Garrett, variously of Dublin, Ottawa, Vancouver, Toronto and Halifax, as well as six great-grandchildren.
Graduated St.Vincent’s High School, Saint John in 1931; worked at Atlantic Sugar Refinery until 1941; wartime service until 1945 with RCAF (Radar Mechanic) in Britain, Belgium and Germany. Married Margaret Ivy Hunter of Edinburgh, Scotland on September 5, 1945. Joined Department of Citizenship and Immigration and worked as Immigration Officer and Attaché in Saint John, Copenhagen, The Hague, Vienna (after the 1956 Hungarian uprising), Ottawa, and Dublin, where he retired in 1980, returning to Ottawa in 1992.Our warmest thanks go to the kindness and professionalism of the staff of the Glebe Centre.
Friends may pay respects at the Kelly Funeral Home – Somerset Chapel, 585 Somerset St. W., Ottawa, ON K2B 7G3, 613-235-6712 Wednesday, December 23, 2015 after 12 noon. A Memorial Service will be held in the chapel at 1 p.m. Interment at the National Military Cemetery at Beechwood Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Ave.
