(He gave so much to so many) Passed away in the arms of his daughters on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 age 77 yrs. Predeceased by his parents Loretta (Flynn) and Edward Patrick Furlong. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 51 years Eleanor (Carew); daughters Kim (Randy) and Judy (Chris); brothers Robert (Alana), Pat (Erica), Dennis (Pierrette), Garry (Marina); sisters Eleanor d, Dolores and Madelyn (Tom); six grandchildren Christopher, Stephen, David, Jonathan, Katie and Sophie; and the Carew family: Joe (Gertrude d), Nick (Ruth), John d, Anne, Danny (Joan d), Marina (Angelo), Sheila and Pat (Jean) and many cherished nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Ed had a long career with NCR Canada, retiring after 38 years of service. He then worked with his son-in-law Chris Mallard at Modern Business Equipment for 12 years. Ed was a volunteer extraordinaire with over 500 hours of service with the Alzheimer's Society of NL doing family support groups across Newfoundland. In 2001, the Lieutenant Govenor awarded Ed with the Newfoundland and Labrador Medal for Volunteerism; an award, which recognizes extraordinary volunteers for their invaluable contribution to our communities and province. He was known as the "pied piper" on the LAMC Alzheimer's Unit where he helped his father and others suffering from the disease. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, sang on the altar of Corpus Christi and volunteered with the St. Vincent to Paul Society organizing many Christmas Food hampers. Ed (aka "FOO") was a proud St. Bon's boy who loved reminiscing about his days at the school and many races against his classmates and bothers. He and Robert would leave Pine Bud Ave racing each other to see if they could make it up the stairs of the school before the bell rang. Ed carried his love for running throughout his life and was seen many Saturdays and Sundays speed walking out LeMarchant Road, climbing up the back of Signal Hill then marching back to his home on 9 Thomas St. One of Ed's proudest moments was when he was chosen to carry the Olympic torch in 1988. Ed loved helping others. He was "Mr. Fix-it", "Johnny on the spot" and was known to have the greenest grass in the 'hood. He had a great sense of humour and zest for life. He could make a 12-string guitar dance and was known for his jiving and theatrical performances with the Corner Brook Playmakers. He will be forever remembered for his devotion to his wife and family, his strong work ethic and positive attitude. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. Resting at Caul's Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road on Saturday, January 2, 2016 and Sunday, January 3, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place on Monday, January 4, 2016 at 9:30 a.m. from Corpus Christi Church.
