It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Ethel Marie Gillis (nee Pettipas) of Halifax at the age of 81. Ethel passed away peacefully on Dec. 21 2015, surrounded by her loving family.
Born Oct. 20, 1934 in Sydney, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Hubert and Phyllis Pettipas of Sydney.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 43 years, Gregory Myles Gillis; brothers, Arthur Pettipas (Helen) Sydney, Gerard Pettipas (Agnes), Moncton, N.B. and sister, Lorraine MacDonald (Art), Ontario.
Ethel is survived by and was the loving mother to Kevin, Kendra (Phillip) Walker - grandchildren, Kiersten and Madison; Karen – grandchildren, Piper and Addison. She was also survived by sisters, Mena (Johnny) Yurchesyn, Sydney, Anna Mae (Art) Stone, Ottawa, Delores (Al) Gariepy, Ontario; Yvonne (Robert) MacKinnon, Sydney; Viny (Alec) Berthier, L'Ardoise, Kay (Wayne) Morrison, Sydney and Elaine (Emile) Roach, as well as, several nieces and nephews.
Ethel was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother and friend to many. She was a kind and gentle soul who always put others needs before her own. She loved to cook, bake and knit. Her greatest joy was spending time with her four grandchildren who adored her. She also enjoyed spending time at the cottage in Queensland. Ethel was a woman of great faith.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass was held 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 2015 in St. Agnes Church, Mumford Rd, Halifax.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Special thanks and gratitude to Dr. Hugh Matheson and the Palliative care team and to a special friend to mom, Bernice Burns.
