With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather and great-grandfather Daniel Hugh 'Dan' McKinnon, age 81, on Jan. 14, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Dan Hughie and Margaret (Matheson) McKinnon.
Dan started serving in the Canadian Armed Forces as a young man which afforded him the opportunity to travel the globe. Upon his retirement Dan brought his family back home to Cape Breton where he took a position as a cook at the C.B. Correctional Center. Before Dan finally retired from there he served several years as a deputy sheriff based out of Sydney, a position which gave him a great sense of pride.
Dan enjoyed being a member of the Cursillo Movement where he took great joy when cooking for the many wonderful people he met there. His favourite weekend pastime was the flea market in Sydney where he was very well known as 'The Watch Man'.
Dan is survived by his daughters, Deborah, Sherry (Ronnie Deleskie); grandchildren, Samantha, Thomas, Brittany, Ronald and Brandon; great-grandchild Anna Catherine Danielle; honorary great-grandchildren, Jayden, Cadi-Lyn, Thomas, all of New Waterford
