Edward 'Gus' O’Leary, age 90 of Glace Bay passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016.
Born and raised in Marconi Towers, he was the son of the late James P. and Mary (Deering) O’Leary. Gus was the last surviving member of the 13 O’Learys.
Gus was a veteran of the Second World War; serving as a member of the Royal Montreal Regiment in England, France and Holland. He was a very proud life member of John Bernard Croak Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 3 where he served as Sergeant of Arms for many years.
Gus was a bricklayer by trade; working 44 years at the Sydney Steel Plant. For a number of years he was a bricklayer foreman. Gus was a member of Local 2 Bricklayer’s Union. He was a member of the former Holy Family Church and was very active in church ministries.
Gus is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Florence (Stashuk) O’Leary; two daughters, Patricia Kane (Stephen), Janet MacVicar (Gary); one son, Michael Edward O’Leary and Abe and Grace White who are considered a part of our family. Grampa was loved by his grandchildren, Stacie (Jeremy), James, Brendan, Matt, Garett and great-grandson, Angus. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Gus was predeceased by one son, Bernie in 2008.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Fr. Dan Boudreau is Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines with interment at a later date in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations in memory of Gus may be made to the Cape Breton Autism Society or a charity of one’s choice.
