Dr. Cyril Condon

Born: May 3rd, 1928

Passed on: January 21st, 2016

Cyril Condon passed peacefully away on Thursday, January 21 2016. All men die. Some never live... Cyril avoided such a fate. He was a presence in life so large that his absence is a void that can never be filled. Now we are tasked with remembering to move past his recent illness and remember who he was... son, brother, husband, father, Gampy, uncle, story teller in English and Gaelic, reciter of poetry, voracious reader, cryptic crossword aficionado, sailor, pilot, HAM radio operator, cruise ship doctor, amateur chef, golfer, sheep farmer, hunter, fisherman, pontificator, physician, life long learner and great friend. Born in Cahir, Co. Tipperary Ireland in 1928, the youngest of seven, Cyril grew up over the family pub. He went on to complete his medical degree at the University College Cork and shortly thereafter made the trip across the pond to Newfoundland. In 1956 Cyril married his soul mate and true love Virginia Penney. They made their way to Buchans, then onto Winnipeg for specialty training before returning to Newfoundland and settling in Corner Brook as the first qualified anesthesiologist on the island. Cyril retired from the practice of anesthesia in 1993. Never one to sit still, he spent his first six months of retirement educating himself so he could spend the next six months as a physician for Norwegian Cruise Line. Cyril always made quite the entrance, ready with quick wit and a "Cyrilism". Fortunately he made his exit peacefully but rather quicker than expected, surrounded by family. He was grateful, pragmatic and organized to the end, giving instruction on where and when to celebrate, music to be played, and who should sing and speak. From the Humber to the Codroy, the Gander, Exploits and the Eagle, the salmon shall breathe easier, the partridge fly freely and the caribou roam more peacefully in his absence as an Irish hunter and fisher in his beloved Newfound land. Predeceased by his beloved Virginia, and son Karl, Cyril leaves to mourn son Garry and wife Linda; daughter Ruth (Connors) and husband Greg; daughter Penney (McTaggart Cowan); grandchildren Liam, Claire, Maura, Ailish, Garry, and Robbie; along with so many dear friends and relatives in Ireland, Canada and the US. The family expresses its sincere gratitude to Drs. Paul Gardiner of St. John's and Gary Gelfand of Calgary. A celebration of his life will take place in St. John's, Newfoundland this summer. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Cyril's memory may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200 - 325 Manning Rd.
