It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our mom Georgena Campbell at the Glace Bay Hospital on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Gardiner Mines, she was the daughter of the late John and Florence (Stubbert) O’Brien.
As a young girl, she worked as a nanny in Ottawa. She returned to the Gardiner where she worked at the Gardiner Mines Retreat House. She then met the love of her life Hartigan Campbell and moved to New Waterford to start her family. She was a homemaker and the mother of five children. Georgena loved to garden, watch the birds, cook and bake, especially tea-biscuits with brown sugar for her grandsons. Georgena loved horses and horse races and over the years she could be found at the track with her husband and children. It was that love that many of her children and grandchildren used to carry on the tradition of harness racing. Georgena was inducted into the Cape Breton Horse Owners Association, Ladies Hall of Fame in 2011.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Hartigan; her daughter, Colleen Campbell-Kelly; grandchildren, Michelle Penny, Alyssa and Blake Campbell; brothers, Bobby O’Brien, Gerald in infancy; sister, Flossie O’Handley and numerous sister and brothers-in-law.
