Passed on: January 22nd, 2016

Joyce (Joycey) Leora. On Friday, January 22, 2016 Joyce (Joycey) passed away peacefully at Surf Lodge in Lockeport. While we are deeply saddened by this, we are thankful she is at peace and honored to have had her in our lives and been loved by her. Joyce was born in Port LaTour in 1934. Her loving father Bradford (deceased) died in 1975 and mother Beatrice (deceased) died in 1978. Joyce spent most of her adult life in Shelburne and in 1968, lost her beloved daughter Gina Bellaire (deceased) and husband Edward Balkam (deceased) in 1978. Joyce was incredibly hard-working and was a tenacious rural mail carrier for Canada Post for over 20 years. During that time, she made friends and was loved by many along her mail route. Joyce is lovingly remembered and will be dearly missed by her devoted and loving son Joel Balkam (Kelly) and siblings Alton (Helen); Earl (Mona); Helen (Charlie) and Gary. She also leaves behind two step-sons, Eddie (Susan) and Chris (Sue). Joyce had a special place in the hearts of many cousins, nieces and nephews and other extended family, friends, and of course the caring staff at Surf Lodge. Throughout her life, Joyce shared her kind spirit, big smile and sense of humor with everyone around her. She was deeply devoted to her family and friends. In her spare time, Joyce was a member of and supported the Shelburne Trinity United Church and Ladies Auxiliary, the Red Hat Society and the Shelburne County Minor Hockey Association. She loved spending time with people, cheering at and watching hockey and baseball games, eating lobster and being a huge fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. Friends and family will be invited to a celebration of Joyce’s life. This will be held in the late Spring or early Summer of this year in Shelburne. Photos, memories and condolences may be sent to: rememberingjoycey@gmail.comIn lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, Shelburne County Minor Hockey Association or the Surf Lodge Memorial Account. Joyce’s family would like to offer their gratitude and appreciation to the incredible staff at Surf Lodge for their exceptional, comforting and loving care over the past three years.
