MOORE, J. Douglas
At Hotel-Dieu of St. Joseph Hospital, Perth-Andover, February 3, 2016, Mr. J. Douglas Moore of Perth-Andover passed away at the age of 76. He was the husband of Hazel (Warman) Moore. Born at New Glasgow, NS in 1939, he was the only child of the late Joseph W. and Elizabeth J. (Clooney) Moore.
Following in the footsteps of his father, Doug owned and operated Moore's Funeral and Ambulance Service beginning in 1962. Son Jeff later joined the family firm. They operated the ambulance service until 1984 and the funeral home until 1991. He was Mayor of Perth-Andover from 1965-1967. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick as MLA for Victoria-Tobique from 1976-1987, all the while serving as Deputy House Speaker and served on several committees including the Ambulance Committee, which ultimately resulted in the creation of today's Ambulance NB. He was a former member of BPOE Perth-Andover Lodge 362. He was also a former member and Secretary of Benjamin Lodge F&AM and a member of the Hospital Board. He was a member of the United Church and a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) where he served as Grand Master for the Atlantic Provinces from 1966-1967; Sovereign Grand Representative from 1967-1970; Sovereign Grand Warden; served on the International Council for several years, covering North America and 32 other countries. During his term, he developed The Hunger and Disaster Fund resulting in millions of dollars given to relieve hunger and provide disaster assistance around the world. After attempting a short period of retirement, Doug went to work for Walmart where he has been a faithful employee for the past 12 years.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, one son, Jeff (Cherie) of Summerside, PEI, daughter-in-law, Kelly of St. John's, NL, grandchildren, John, Amy, Joseph, Dianna and Tiana, great grandchildren, Gavin, Samara, David and Jaylex, step-great grandchildren, Seanna, Tristan and Keaton. He was predeceased by a son, David in 1994.
Resting at St. James United Church, Perth-Andover with visiting hours on Friday, February 5th from 2 to 9 p.m. His funeral sevice will be held Saturday, February 6th at 2 p.m. from the church with Rev. Steve Longmoore officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Presbyterian Rural Cemetery.
