LINDEN, MARTIN
The family wishes to announce the death of Martin Linden, 85, husband of Ruth Linden, of Nordin, who passed away Monday, February 8, 2016 at the Miramichi Hospital at the age of 85. Martin was born September 21, 1930 in Holland to Sjaak and Nel (Weeckers) Van Der Linden.
Martin attended Agricultural College in Holland, and immigrated to Canada in 1954. He initially worked on a farms in Ontario and New Brunswick. He established a dairy farm in Whitney, New Brunswick. He used his extensive agricultural knowledge to build up a very successful business, and to help other farmers who respected his knowledge. Owing to his leadership qualities he was recruited to serve on many agricultural boards, including Northumberland Co-op, where he was Chairman of the Board for several years. He also served on the boards of the Miramichi Exhibition, Dairy Town, Milk Marketing Board, and the Soil and Crop Association. He sold his farm in 1982 and established his own business, Linden Sales, that provided farm supplies. In his later years, Martin especially enjoyed fishing for trout and salmon, collecting berries, gardening, woodworking, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Martin is survived by his wife Ruth (Coates, Burns); sons John (Whitneyville) and Peter (Monique) (Moncton); daughter Jane (Al) (Calgary); stepson Peter Burns (Tammy) (Indiana, USA); step grandsons Kelson and Owen Burns; step granddaughter Sarah Burns; and mother of his children Wilhemien Linden (Whitneyville). He is also survived in Holland by brothers Bart, Leo, and Theu Van Der Linden; sister Lies Van Der Linden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Martin was predeceased by his parents, an infant sister, and step daughter Lesley Burns.
Please note: there will be no visitation at the funeral home. A public funeral service will be held from Bell’s Funeral Home Chapel, 651 King George Highway, Miramichi, NB on Thursday, February 11th at 2 PM with The Venerable Richard Steeves officiating. Burial will follow at the Miramichi Cemetery at a later date.
In Martin’s memory, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
