William Joseph Pembroke

It is with regret that we, the family of William Joseph Pembroke, announce the sudden passing of our father on Feb. 10, 2016.
Born Jan. 13, 1935, Da was the son of the late Catherine (Gouthro) Pembroke and James Pembroke.
He worked in the coal mines in his early years but most of his working days were spent in construction. He had a passion for wildlife, spending many years as president of the New Waterford Fish and Game. He loved fishing and hunting as well as having a game of 'bish' with his family.
Da is survived by his seven children, Marie, Kevin (Mary), Donna 'Elaine' (Kenny) Rose, Billy (Donna), Dianne (Mike) Gillis, all of Cape Breton, Adrian (Melanie), B.C., and his special son and buddy Wayne, at home. He is also survived by sisters, Margie (Bobby) Morrison, Lorraine (Vincent) Tighe, Elaine 'Dolly' (late Roger) Cirella, Joan Pembroke Bennett (Fred); brothers, Ronnie (Eva), Rammie (Sandy), Addie (Patsy) and Blair (Paula); longtime companion, Jeanette MacEachern; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
William was predeceased by his wife, Donna (MacNeil), brother Jimmy and nephews Jimmy and Blair.
Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 12, 2016 from 6-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in St. Michael's Cemetery at a later date. A luncheon will be held at St. Leonard's Parish Hall, Convent Street, immediately following the funeral mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Horizon Achievement Centre, Sydney, N.S. Special thanks to Homecare staff, especially to Joanne Chaulk who went above and beyond her call of duty.
