It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of Viola MacKay, 64, on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Cheticamp on Oct. 3, 1951, she is the oldest child of the late Jimmy and Mary (Murphy) MacPherson.
In her early years, Viola was a hairdresser and after that she pursued a career in education. She was the director and a teacher at the New Waterford and District Pre-School for over three decades, touching the lives of many local children and adults. She was also an ECE instructor with I.H.S.E. Viola loved spending time with her family, bowling and enjoyed a good game of Rummy 500.
Viola is survived by her husband Joseph MacKay, her two children Kimberly and Dennis Tobin, Kelly MacKay and the father of her children, Webb Woodland; grandchildren, Logan Sampson, Connor Sampson, Joshua Woodland, Ashley Boyette, Dakota Tobin, Melanie Tobin, and one great-granddaughter Jade Boyette; also left to mourn are siblings Jean MacDonald, Shirley Earle (Andrews), Charlene Golemic (Ross), Gibby MacPherson (Darlene), Bernadene Burton (Donald), Alice MacPherson and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will take place on Friday, Feb. 26, 2016, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016, at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating, followed by a luncheon at the Army, Navy and Airforce, Smith Street. All are welcome. Burial will be held in St. Michaels Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 902-862-7500.
