CROWELL, William (Bill) of Lake Annis, NS and Ocala, FL.
William Crowell passed away in Ocala, Florida on February 25 at the age of 90. Bill was born in Sydney, Cape Breton on June 25, 1925, son of Clement W. Crowell and Esther (Lewis) Crowell. His earliest years were spent in Boston MA. Following the crash of 1929, the family spent a year in Lake Annis, Yarmouth County, where Bill attended kindergarten in a one-room schoolhouse. He grew up in Lockeport where he attended school with the exception of a year in Manhattan and a year at Mount Allison Academy in Sackville, NB. As a boy, Bill served in the reserves and during WWII he served in the Canadian Infantry, fighting in France, Belgium and Holland. He was severely wounded three times and received a Purple Heart in an American field hospital on the Seine. After discharge, Bill studied art at the Nova Scotia College of Art and at Mount Allison University where he met and married Frances Cameron. They had two daughters, Christine Elizabeth and Jane Annette. Bill taught in Shelburne for 5 years and for 15 years in Montreal. During that time, he completed additional studies at Sir George Williams University, received a Master’s degree from SUNY and pursued doctoral work at Florida State University. Upon his return to Nova Scotia, Bill taught in Port Maitland and in Yarmouth. Bill’s lifelong interests included both art and writing. He owned Crowell Art Gallery in Yarmouth and published Bluenose Magazine. He also authored several books. His passion for Scottish heritage is evidenced by serving as President of Clan Cameron for many years and by co-sponsoring Tartan Day. He leaves a wife, Suzanne Millman Jeansonne, daughters Christine Miles of Ocala and Jane Crowell-Bour of Edmonton and a sister, Barbara Leverman of Halifax. Bill’s four grandchildren are Jennifer Miles McCarthy (Kevin) of Tempe, AZ, Kimberly Miles Whiting (Michael) of Rockledge, FL, Christophe William Crowell-Bour (Alix) of Edmonton and Patrick Crowell-Bour (Katherine) of Edmonton. Bill’s great-grandchildren are Kevin, Gabrielle and Madison McCarthy, Ethan and Lily Whiting and Rory William Crowell-Bour (son of Patrick and Katherine).
