Marion Smith

SMITH, MARION JEAN
The family of Marion Jean Smith is sad to announce her passing, which occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton on March 5, 2016. Marion was born in Yarmouth, NS, youngest daughter of the late Maude (Stoddard) and Thomas Selvage.
She is survived by her only son David (Connie) of Fredericton. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Austin; sisters Alice, Margaret, Helen, and Katherine; brothers Joseph and Kenneth all of Yarmouth, NS; also loving companion William (Bill) Rasley of Fredericton.
Marion was a member of the Nashwaaksis United Church.
She was employed by School District 18 (formerly 26) as school secretary at Smythe Street School and Royal Road School for a number of years, retiring from the Royal Road School in the mid-90s.
She maintained a long-time friendship with other retirees from the Royal Road School and enjoyed going to monthly luncheons with them. She continued her secretarial role by making reservations and keeping everyone informed of the date and place where the lunch would be held each month.
She was an avid knitter for many years and won several awards at the Fredericton Exhibition.
Her other main passion was thrift shopping and going to yard sales. She loved finding a bargain and enjoyed seeking out hidden treasures, then she enjoyed having her own annual yard sale.
Marion was fiercely independent and struggled with her loss of mobility and deteriorating health in the last few years, but she fought hard until the end and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held at Bishop’s Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton on Tuesday afternoon from 2 to 4 pm. A memorial service will be held at the Nashwaaksis United Church on Wednesday March 9 at 11:30 am with Rev. Franklin Curtis officiating. Interment will be held at Sunny Bank Cemetery at a later date.
Marion requested that those wishing to make a donation in her memory consider the I.W.K. or a charity of the donor’s choice.
