Mitchell “Mitch” Cove

The family of Robert Mitchell “Mitch” Cove, age 61, of Amherst, are saddened to announce his passing on Sunday, March 13, 2016 with his family by his side at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan.
Mitch was born on February 12, 1955 in Amherst to parents Earl and Joyce (D’Orsay) Cove.
He graduated from Amherst Regional High School in 1973 and received a Bachelor of Commerce from Dalhousie University in 1977. In 1986 he became a Chartered Accountant and, later, upon the merger of professional accounting bodies, a Chartered Professional Accountant. He was also a Certified Financial Planner.
Growing up, Mitch played hockey on provincial teams and participated in the first six annual minor hockey tournaments held in Amherst. He continued playing hockey until his health prevented him from doing so in 2012. He also played High School soccer in grades 11 and 12 and played two years of senior soccer. Mitch continued his involvement in hockey with the Amherst Junior Ramblers executive in the 1980s and 1990s and was instrumental in bringing the 1993 Centennial Cup to Amherst. He coached at the Tim Bits level for nine consecutive years and Bantam AA in 2000 – 2001.
In 2002 Mitch moved to Halifax to continue his career; he worked in various roles in industry and public practice.
Mitchell will be missed by his four children, Patricia, James, Brent, and Vicki Lynn; his parents; brothers Larry (Terry) Cove and Jeffrey (Roseann) Cove and their families; aunts Ruth (Dale) Ackles, Mary (Lloyd) Langille, Ruth (Irvin) Maxwell and uncles George (Cheryl) D’Orsay and Guy Smith; and numerous cousins.
He was predeceased by grandparents Gordon and Marjorie (Ayer) D’Orsay, Clayton and Dorothy (Jones) Cove, step-grandfather Stewart Whyte, and aunts and uncle Murial and Arnott England and Phyllis Smith.
Thanks to Drs. Stephanie Snow, Medical Oncologist, Ian Duplesie, Pain Management, Keith Short, Palliative Care, and Igor Semenov, General Practitioner; to Palliative Care Consult Nurse Amy Thurston; and to the nurses and staff at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.
Following Mitch’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
A Celebration of Mitch’s Life will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2016 from 2 – 4 p.m. at Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St, Amherst, 902-667-9906.
Donations in Mitchell’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, Palliative Care Unit of the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, or the charity of your choice.
