Rollande Hyde

Passed on: March 2nd, 2016

Rollande Marie Hyde, age 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at the Swift Current Care Center, Swift Current SK, with her daughter, Lucille, at her side. Rollande “Mom” was born on January 28, 1924, at Mayberry SK in the District of Spring Valley, to Joseph & Lucille Duchene. Rollande had one sister, Rejeanne, and seven brothers, Andrew, Rene, Paul, Maurice, Bernard, and Pierre. Mom attended elementary school at Sugarloaf School, and later went to the College of Notre Dame in Wilcox, SK. Mom’s family on both sides were avid baseball ball players and competed on the Mayberry Whitesocks team. The team consisted of Joe Duchene (Moms Dad) and all of her Mothers brothers – the 4 Bernard boys. They were of professional caliber and played all over Western Canada and the Western United States. The competitive nature of this family is reflective of the competitive nature of Rollande’s children and grandchildren. Mom was married to Harold Hyde in March of 1944 and they farmed in the Wawota District until 1956, when they relocated to Alida, SK, where Dad took a job as a Battery Operator within the oilfield. In 1970, they relocated to Pennant, SK where they bought the Pennant Hotel and restaurant. They operated it together until 1975, when Dad became ill. Mom and Dad sold the hotel and moved to Swift Current, SK and Dad passed away in 1976. Mom continued to live in Swift Current for the next 40 years of her life. During Moms time in Swift Current, she worked in the hospitality Industry and various business ventures with her children. Mom’s family was the most important aspect of her life and was her main focus. Mom was always ready to lend a hand or be there whenever family needed her. Besides Mom and her immediate family she was always ready to take someone else under her wing. Mom always shared her children and grandchildren’s accomplishments with everyone she knew, even though most of them never knew she did. Moms passion in life was dancing and being entertained with music. About 1987, Mom met Stan Reynolds and they became partners on the dance floor and spent weekends going to flea markets and assisting at the 2nd hand store. Mom was a very social person and always had to be surrounded by people, whenever she went. Anywhere she knew someone she took the time to visit with them and acknowledge their presence. Mom was a member of the Catholic Women's League for over 50 years as she had joined the group at Cantal, SK as a charter member. Mom’s faith and religion were a very important part of her life and she practised it and believed in her faith until her passing. In 2012, when Mom entered long term care, her social worker teased her that they were going to have to be on their toes if Mom was joining their community. Mom was well known for her hours of visiting in the long term care facilities and her advocacy for quality care. Mom made many residents’ concerns her own and went to bat for them with great passion. This continued in the Swift Current Care Center for her fellow residents. I am sure every care worker was called upon by Mom to attend to someone's needs other than her own, whether it was for food or mobility assistance. Rollande leaves to cherish her memory her children and grandchildren, Lucille (Larry) McFadyen: Jean (Val) Hyde, Jana, Heather, Brendon: Gerald Hyde, Melanie, Jodi, Kevin: Geraldine (Edward) Gervais, George, Duane: Joseph (Helen) Hyde, Benjamin, Shawn, Joseph: Maurice – predeceased (Helen) Hyde, Tanya, Bradley, Jenna Lee: Rosemarie (Archie) Gannon, Connie, Scarlet, Alin, Nikki; and her numerous great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold; and by her son, Maurice. Our family is grateful to the Swift Current Care Centre workers for their care and support. The home was a source of comfort to our family as we knew Mom was looked after when we could not be there.
