George MacDonald Casson

CASSON, George MacDonald – 78, Truro, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, following a sudden illness, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Truro, he was the son of the late Morris and Inez (MacDonald) Casson. In his early years, George was educated in Truro and then went on to attend Nova Scotia Agricultural College, then Dalhousie University and Macdonald Campus of McGill University. He began his career as a biologist with Cyanamid of Canada. Following this, he and his family returned to Nova Scotia where he worked side by side with his wife, Bela, in several hospitality ventures in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. He spent 11 years as the Executive Director of East Hants Sportsplex and the last number of years working with his son at Casson Family Farm. At the time of his death, he was serving as President of Truro Farmers Market. George will be missed by his family, many friends and his K-9 companion, April, with whom he loved walking in Victoria Park. George is survived by his son, Marcus, and grandson, Danney George, Central New Annan; son, Niels, Vancouver, British Columbia; sister, Joan (Gerry) Carter, Dartmouth; nieces, Lisa (David) Davies, Cole Harbour; Jill (Robert) Nylen, Saint John, New Brunswick; nephew, Andrew (Kim) Carter, Iowa. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Maria Elisabeth “Bela” (Klemm) Casson. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, March 18, 2016, in Saint Andrew’s United Church, 55 King Street, Truro, Reverend Jay Ettinger officiating. Reception will follow. Interment in Robie Street Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s memory to Saint Andrew’s United Church (General Fund) are welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.
