Mary 'Eileen' (Gallivan) McNeil

Born In: Sydney

Passed in: Bedford, Canada
Passed on: March 22nd, 2016

We are deeply saddened by the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, Nana, great-grandmother and dear friend on March 22, 2016 at Ivany Place, Bedford.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Cleophas (McGillivary) and William Gallivan of Whitney Pier.
Following graduation from Holy Angels in Sydney, Eileen pursued a nursing career, graduating from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Glace Bay. It was there she met and nursed her young patient Hector McNeil. Following his successful recovery and their subsequent marriage, Eileen devoted all of herself to loving and raising her family of four until nursing called her back to St Joseph’s.
As nursing supervisor of St. Joseph’s Hospital for many years she continued her vocation until retirement in 1988. During her career she touched so many with her kindness and gentle ways developing life-long friendships.
Besides remaining an active member of the nursing school alumnae, Eileen’s friends were an important part of her life - anyone who knew Mom loved her.
Eileen’s faith in God was unshakeable. She was a devout and lifelong member of St. Anne's Parish, Glace Bay and an active member in the Catholic Women's League.
She was a dedicated mother, who put her children above all else – always there for us. We have been truly blessed to have such a precious, caring and gentle mother, role model and friend in our lives.
Eileen is survived by her sons, Martin (Linda) and Allan; daughters, Colleen (Bill) Long, Joan (Ted) Delehanty; grandchildren, Laura, Martin, Liam, Kate and Emma; great-grandchildren, Abbigail and Elley.
Eileen was predeceased by husband, Hector; her siblings, Cecilia Darnbrough, Collette MacNeil and Will Gallivan.
A funeral mass celebrating Eileen’s life will be held at St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay on July 1st, 2016 at 11 a.m.
Our family would like to thank to Dr. Michael Gallivan who took exceptional care of our mother. A special thank you to Mom’s very special sister-in-law, her lifelong friends, extended family and healthcare workers who supported Mom during her failing health.
