William "Bill" Whalen, son of Stanley and Loretta (Gardiner) Whalen of Nelson Miramichi passed away on April 2nd, at the age of 73.

He also served two years on the Village Council of Nelson Miramichi where he was instrumental in the formation of the local fire department.
Workers truly lost a great friend with the passing of Bill who was a long time activist and labor leader. He then became a full time employee of Canadian Union of Public Employees until his retirement. He was always heavily involved in the Labor movement and was a life long advocate for his workers. Bill served as president of Newcastle and Chatham Labor Council for six years and vice-president of the NB Federation of Labor for nine years. He also sat on the Minimum Wage Board, Atlantic Labor Education Center Board and Workers Compensation Board.
