George Nemish
February 16, 1924 – April 7, 2016
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather. George passed away peacefully in hospital at the age of 92. George was born in a small village in Ukraine on February 16, 1924. He immigrated to Canada at the age of 3 with his parents Wasyl and Helen and his older sister Mary. They homesteaded in the Krydor District where he grew up and helped work the farm. He later moved to Prince Albert where he began hauling pulp in northern Sask. During this time he met the love of his life Ann (Hrynenko). They married in 1946 and moved to the Honeymoon area to farm. During this time they were blessed with two children Sylvia and Morris. In 1956 George moved his young family to Prince Albert and began working at the Coke Plant. Years later he went back to trucking and worked for Frank Ruszkowski until his retirement in 1980. Then he took on another job – babysitting his grandchildren when needed. He loved it! After mom retired they enjoyed fishing, playing Kaiser and having regular coffee sessions with family and friends. Dad and Mom were always eager to attend the many sporting events and other activities that involved their five grandchildren. Family was very important to him. You would often find him working side by side with Mom and making bags and bags of perogies. Why? “In case the kids come, they’ll need some for home.” His greatest joy was helping his family and watching them grow and prosper. When Mom passed away in January, 2015 after 68 years of marriage, a part of him went with her. Now they will be reunited once again. Dad will be sadly missed, but forever remembered by his children: Sylvia (Stan) Mardell and Morris (Paullette) Nemish; 5 grandchildren: Tracy (Joel), Trevor (Heidi), Brad (Megan), Shelley (Brent) and Jeff (Rebecca) and 7 great grandchildren Ty, Ryleigh, Cody, Sadie, Anna, Sara and Janae; his sister Anne Boyce and his brother John (Irene) Nemish and many nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his wife – Ann; sister Mary & brother-in-law Dick Petruniak; brother-in-law Henry Boyce and his parents Wasyl and Helen Nemish. We will love and miss you dearly. (Vichnaya Pamiat). Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 305 – 6th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with Father Michael Lomaszkiewicz officiating. Interment will be held at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 54 – 11th Street East, Prince Albert, SK S6V 0Z9 or to a charity of your choice.
