It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Nicholas Whelan surrounded by his loving family on April 12, 2016 at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital at the age of 79 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife of 54 years, Madonna; son Glenn (Melvina), Stephenville Crossing; daughters: Judy (Todd) Morgan and Rochelle Kearley, Kippens; grandchildren: Drew and Erin Morgan and Ian Kearley; sisters: Margorie Newman, Placentia, Agnes Ryan, Holyrood, Mary (Ed) Edmunds,Toronto, Helen (Stan) McHugh, Marysvale, Betty (Bill) Wall, Colliers; brother Francis (Noreen) Whelan, Sydney, NS; brothers-in-law: Terry (Winnie) Young, Ernest (Geraldine) Young, Lloyd (Barb) Young, Albert (Julie) Young, Eddy Young; sisters-in-law: JoAnne (Gary) Butt, Carbonear, Lorraine Young, Fort McMurray, AB and a large circle of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents: Nicholas Sr. and Gertrude (Murphy); son-in-law Peter Kearley; grandson Glenn Bennett Whelan; brothers: Stephen Walsh, Michael Walsh, Kieran Whelan, Vincent Whelan; sisters: Bridget Cole and Theresa Russell. He was born on May 20, 1936 in Colliers, Conception Bay. He began his work life as a heavy equipment mechanic in Sept Isles, Quebec at the age of sixteen. He worked in St. John's and for the U.S. Air Force in Goose Bay and Stephenville where he met the love of his life Madonna. He spent his life enjoying outings at the cabin, gathering fire wood, fishing and "ferging" in his garage. He always had a story to tell, enjoyed dancing the Colliers "scuff" and was well known for his hardy laugh. He fought leukaemia courageously for 13 years with a positive outlook and his faith. He will always be loved and remembered forever in our hearts. Madonna, Glenn, Judy and Rochelle. To honour and respect Nicholas's wishes cremation has taken place at Humber Valley Crematorium, Pasadena. Visitation will take place on Thursday, April 14, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Fillatre's Funeral Home, Stephenville Crossing. The funeral Mass was will be held on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 10 a.m. from Assumption Parish in Stephenville Crossing with Father Edmund Dantes officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Stephenville Crossing. As expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
