John Vincent 'Jack'  Long

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John 'Jack' Vincent Long on Monday, April 18, 2016. Jack passed while at the Glace Bay Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was a resident of Taigh Na Mara Veterans Care Facility in Glace Bay.
Born on March 28, 1933, Jack was raised in Whitney Pier and was a veteran of the Korean War. Jack was a longtime member of the Holy Redeemer parish, a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 128, Whitney Pier and long retired from Sydney Steel.
He was predeceased by his parents, the late John and Catherine 'Katie' (Young) Long; his wife and best friend, the late Angela 'Dolly' Long; their daughter, Juanita Long; his granddaughter, Renee Long; as well as his brothers, Arthur, Roy and Wally; and sister, Shirley.
Jack is survived by his daughters, Cathy Goyetche and Sherry (Donald) Morrison; sons, Jackie (Debbie) Long and Matthew (Carla) Long; grandchildren, Helen (Doug) Chase, Carrie Tobin, Winter (Rick) Devoe, Melissa (Larry) Danielson, J.D. Long, Ethan Morrison and Katie Laybolt; 11 great-grandchildren; as well as his brothers, Lloyd Long, Robert Long, Kenny (Denise) Long, Leo (Wilena) Long; sisters, Viola (George) Hubert, Joyce Cote, Rosie (James) Johnston, Leona (Joe) Sampson, Colleen (Ernie) Sampson; and his sister-in-law, Barbara Long.
Jack’s greatest passion in life was his family. His love for taking his children fishing and grandchildren camping on the Cabot Trail gave him great joy. There are no words to portray how much Jack will be missed by his children and grandchildren. Dad (Papa), we love you. You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will take place at Holy Redeemer Church on Friday 10 a.m., with Rev. Paul Murphy officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Many thanks to the staff of the veterans wing of Taigh Na Mara for the excellent care and compassion provided to our father over the past year.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the veterans wing at Taigh Na Mara in Glace Bay.
