It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our father, grandfather, and brother, Alfred James Burke, 99, of Portage who passed away at the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont UHC on Thursday April 21, 2016. Born in Sydney River, NS on February 23rd, 1917, he was the son of the late Alphée and Marguerite (Atkinson) Bourque.
As a young man, he worked in the woods of Nova Scotia alongside his father in the logging business for Bragg Lumber Co. Shortly after his return to Portage, he started a trucking business and eventually founded A. J. Burke and Sons Ltd.
He will be sadly missed by his three daughters: Elaine Ouellette (Amand) of Grand-Barachois, Lois Landry (Jean) of Shediac and Roselynn Bourque (Guy) of Portage; two sons: Brian (Charleen) and Douglas (Anise) both of Portage; two sisters: Annie Richard of Cap-Pelé and Yvonne Brun of Shediac; 14 grandchildren: Rodney (Janice), Gail (Billy), Joyce (Shawn), Danny (Sandy), Annette (Paul), Diane (Billy), Pierre (Janice), Jessica (Chris), Sarah (Andrey), Melanie (Andy), Mario (Isabelle), Jeannot (Steph), Janelle and Joel;three great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law: Janita Burke of Cap-Pelé.as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife: Margaret Niles (1996); one son: Alfred Jr.; one sister, Louise; two brothers: Arthur, Ralston and three infants: James, Joan and Barry.
By request, he will be resting at his residence, 5049 route 15, Portage on Sunday from 2pm to 4pm and from 7pm to 9pm only. The funeral will be held at Ste Thérèse d’Avila Roman Catholic church on Monday April 25th at 11am. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
In memory of Alfred, a contribution to the Oncology unit of the Dr. Georges-L Dumont UHC or to the Atlantic Cancer Research Institute would be appreciated.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of Frenette Funeral and Cremation Centre, 396 Main Street, Shediac (532-3297).
