Ida Brekken

Passed on: April 14th, 2016

BREKKEN: Eleven days short of her 103rd birthday, Ida Christina, our precious gift, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2016 at the Swift Current Care Centre with her family by her side. Ida was born to Tollef and Kristina Anderson on the family homestead near Waldeck, SK. The sole survivor of her family, she was the fifth of eleven children. Being a member of such a large family meant a lot of hard work caring for siblings and doing farm chores. After marrying Eugene Agar on June 7, 1931, Ida became a full time mother and remained home to raise their four daughters Colleen, Lorraine, Ramona and Diane. Eugene passed away on November 2, 1944, which left Ida to raise and provide for her daughters for the next few years. She married Ole Brekken on July 2, 1947 and began her new adventure in life as a farmer's wife near Fosterton, SK. They retired in 1973 and moved back permanently to Ida's home in Swift Current, SK. Ida was fortunate in being able to remain there and celebrated her 100th birthday in the home she treasured. She moved to the Swift Current Care Centre on January 20, 2014 and remained there until her passing. Ida's home was the main meeting place for her family. Possessions were never important to her, but a welcoming home and park-like yard were a must. She was an exceptional cook, baker, quilter, embroiderer, dancer, and fierce competitor in all games from Yahtzee to canasta. As a resident of the Care Centre, she was able to continue with card playing, jigsaw puzzling, watching birds at her feeder in her window and most of all, visiting with family and friends. Ida was the epitome of kindness, grace and humility and has left us with more life lessons than we can count. Two examples that stand out the most: Be good to each other and help those who need it, and secondly, you can't take back words that have already been said, so walk away. She loved us all and had a way of making each of us feel that we were her favorite. Ida was predeceased by her parents Tollef and Kristina Anderson; siblings Bertha, Emil, Sverre, Trigve, Clara, Olaf, Harold, Ruth, Marvin and George; both of her husbands Eugene Agar and Ole Brekken; daughters Colleen and Diane; sons-in-law Cameron Hunter and Albert Gusikoski; and grandson Hal Gusikoski and grandson-in-law Sam Ashton. She is survived by her daughters Lorraine (Ed) Woods and Ramona Gusikoski; grandchildren Eugene (Diane) Hunter, Shauna Ashton, Kim (Ken) Seibel, Tim Hunter, Brad (Laura) Woods, Lindy (Larry) Appleyard, Patty Woods, Derek (Pam) Woods and Bret (Sherri) Gusikoski; 16 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Ida's family would like to thank the staff at the Swift Current Care Centre for the care she received as a resident. Ida was appreciative of the care and many kind gestures and developed close relationships with many of the staff and residents. As per Ida's wishes, donations may be made to The Salvation Army P.O. Box 2061 Swift Current, SK S9H 4M7. The funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday April 21, 2016 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Greg Kiel officiating and Arlie Neufeld providing music. The candle lighting in memory of loved ones was done by great grandson Chad Hunter, the tribute was given by great grandson Kevin Seibel, and the scripture readings were read by great grandsons Steven Gusikoski and Nevin Appleyard. As per her wishes pallbearers were her grandsons Eugene Hunter, Brad Woods, Bret Gusikoski, Tim Hunter, Derek Woods, grandson-in-law Ken Seibel and ushers were her great grandsons Trampas Ashton, Shawn Gusikoski, Troy Woods, and Cale Woods. Warren's Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
