Jim died at Sunnybrook Hospital of metastatic prostate cancer, age 87. He was predeceased by his parents Harold Curtis and the former Jennie Richardson of Paris, Ontario and by his siblings Don Curtis and Lorraine Peever. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Alice Pilgrim, his children Anne (Blake Woodside), Carol (Victor Budgell) and Bruce (Wendy Turner), his grandchildren Malcolm, Fraser and Owen Woodside and Katie (Jonathan Harrison) and Matthew (Samantha DeBaie) Budgell and his great grandson Elijah Budgell.
Jim was a Captain in the Canadian Armed Forces and spent his spare time farming on the North Mountain of the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. He raised sheep and cattle, had a large garden and enjoyed walking in the woods. He was legally blind in his later years but was very stoic and never complained. He spent his last 5 years with his daughter in Toronto once he could no longer cope in Mount Hanley and enjoyed his dog Lucy. He remained interested in the activities around him till the end. Thanks to his caregivers Josie, Kristel, Para, Leni, Carla and Nena.
The funeral will be held at St John’s York Mills Anglican Church, 19 Don Ridge Drive, Toronto, Saturday April 30 at 11:30 am. A reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers donations to the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Prostate Cancer Canada or the CNIB would be appreciated.
