Emily Jane Carroll

Born: December 11th, 1922

Passed on: April 25th, 2016

It is with great sadness that the family of Emily “Jane” Carroll announces her passing. Jane was born in Cook’s Harbour on December 11, 1922. She was one of seven children of James and Mary Ann Short. She lived in Cook’s Harbour until she met the love of her life, William Carroll, who she married on January 11, 1943. She then moved to William’s hometown of Locke’s Cove, and that same year they welcomed their first born son, Herbert. In 1952, they were blessed with their only daughter Girty, and their second son Maxwell was born in 1956. In 1967 the residents of Locke’s Cove were forced to resettle, Jane and Bill then moved back to Cook’s Harbour.
They loved life and family so much and they shared many happy moments including the birth of five granddaughters Darlene, Nadine, Natalie, Deanna, and Nancy, two grandsons Travis and Tyrone. Jane often cooked for her entire family; she was the glue that held her family together during mealtimes and all holidays. At times she prepared meals for 25 people or more and she always loved having a crowd around. She worked hard during her life time and as with each new baby, she was blessed with 11 great-grandchildren, Billy, Jayden, Dustin, Brooke, Dillon, Aadyn, Justice, Xander, Addyson, Sophie, and Briar. Jane had a very difficult year in 2007 when her beloved husband of 64years passed away. After his passing she moved in with her daughter Girty. Life was never the same for her; she still tried to enjoy life to its fullest, but a huge piece of her world was missing. Her health gradually began to decline and in August 2013 she became bedridden. The next three years she depended entirely on her family, which wasn’t easy for a woman who was always used to tending on others.
On April 21st, 2016 Jane was admitted to the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital; this was a difficult decision for her daughter Girty. Jane’s health was declining faster and she passed peacefully away on April 25th, 2016 at 5:20 a.m. Jane leaves behind a large circle of family and friends who will miss her for the rest of their lives. She leaves to mourn her loving daughter and best friends Girty Larkin (James), her youngest son Maxwell Carroll (Barbara); sister Bertha Noble; brother Absalom Short (Violet); grandchildren Darlene (Deon), Nadine (Hank), Natalie (Randy), Deanna (David), Nancy (Steven), Travis (Krysta), and Tyrone (Sally); her great-grandchildren Billy, Jayden, Dustin, Brooke, Dillon, Aadyn, Justice, Xander, Addyson, Sophie and Briar, as well as a large circle of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband William Carroll, son Herbert Carroll, daughter-in-law Mamie Carroll, parents James and Mary Ann Short, brothers Chesley (Martha), Walter (Josephine), and Stanley, and sister Girty Campbell (Jake).
Visitation was held at William Carroll’s House in Cook’s Harbour followed by the funeral service which took place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 29 at the United Church in Cook’s Harbour with Rev. Gus Pendleton officiating. Interment followed at the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Kerry M. Fillatre Funeral Homes, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard, funeral director.
