Renée Laura Canning

Renée Laura Canning, 93, Amherst, NS. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother Renée on Sunday, May 22, 2016.
Born in Joggins, NS., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Laura (Tilmant) Dauvin.
She worked in Parrsboro in her early years where she met her future husband Thomas Canning. They lived and raised their family in Halifax where Tom served with the R.C.M.P. Renée worked at Fran's Hat Shop for a few years but was mainly a homemaker. In retirement, they returned to Cumberland Co. and settled in Maccan, NS. After her husband's death, she moved to Amherst and for the last two years was a resident at White Birches Retirement Home in Amherst. Renée was devoted to her family and was always ready to do anything for them. She enjoyed music, knitting, and especially baking. She will be remembered by many for her famous fruitcake. Renée will also be remembered by friends and family for her kindness. She was a gentle soul.
She is survived by her daughter Janis (Jim) Pollitt, Fall River, NS; son Tommy, Gambo, NL; grandchildren Susan Casey, Halifax; Jon Pollitt, Halifax; Sharlene Canning, Burnaby, BC; Gloria Canning, Fredericton, NB; great grandchildren MacKenzie, Jasmine, and Jensen. She is also survived by her loving sister Lillian Goguen, Estero, Florida; as well as many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas; brothers, Louis Dauvin, Victor Dauvin; sister Lea Richard and special niece Debbie Murphy.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst (902-667-8777) on Monday, May 30 2016 at 1:30 p.m., Deacon Howard Gottell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of NS or charity of your choice.
The family wishes to thank the staff and residents of White Birches retirement home for the love and kindness shown to Mom; the staff of the Medical Inpatient Unit of the Cumberland Health Care Centre; Dr. Carlos Rubio-Reyes, Mom's longtime doctor, and Dr. Janneke Gradstein who saw her in paliative care. Thank you also to family and friends, some who called daily, and others who visited Mom and helped her through the years. A special thanks to niece Eileen Perry for always being there for her.
