Passed on: May 28th, 2016
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Florence Elizabeth Drake (Foo-ah) who left us peacefully in her sleep on May 28, 2016.
Florence was born on Oct. 28, 1933, the daughter of the late William and Julia Quinn of Millville, Cape Breton.
After attending Normal College, she taught in Alder Point, Bras d’Or, CFB Greenwood, St. Hubert and Dartmouth. She spent many years at Shannon Park and Notting Park Elementary in Dartmouth teaching grades primary and one where her students became a part of her extended family and she loved seeing them throughout the years.
She was a woman of deep faith and a proud member of St. Paul’s congregation. She served as a Eucharistic minister, catechist and volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul. A kind and generous soul, her door was always open and a meal or a cup of tea always offered. Foo-ah loved music, cards and letters, a good game of scat, a good drink, listening to CBC and chatting on the phone.
Above all else Florence devoted her entire life to her extended children, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was a mother to all. Every one of her children received her full support and personal praise. She left her mark on every single one of them and will be sadly missed and never forgotten. She treasured time spent with close friends; especially her Muffin Club girls.
She was predeceased by her parents, brother, Danny, brother-in-law George, sister-in-law Valerie, three siblings who died in infancy, her in-laws and nephew Robert Drake.
Surviving Florence are her husband of 50 years, Don Drake; her sisters Mary Fenerty, Anita (Bobby) Anthony; sister-in-law Ann Quinn; brothers Alex (Mary) Quinn, Andrew Quinn; sister-in-law June (Lloyd) Schnare; brother-in-law Bob Drake; godchildren Julia Anthony and Donnie Quinn and by numerous nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass to take place on May 31 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Parish Dartmouth. Burial will take place in Cape Breton during the summer. We will always love you a bushel-and-a-peck and a hug-around-the-neck.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Dartmouth Funeral Home.
