Elizabeth "Betty" Fahie of Halifax, passed away peacefully on Tues, April 19. She was born in Springhill, NS on Jan. 15th, 1922, she was the daughter of Gus and Anna Older of Springhill.
Betty, as she was known by her family and friends, was predeceased by her Husband, Don Fahie; her parents and nine siblings: Carl, Gussie Dykens (William), William (Jennie), Minnie Filmore (Ernest), Freda Moore (William), Mary Matheson (Ken), Hattie Murray (John), Clara Beaton (Herbert), and Anne Cameron (Roy). She is survived by her stepchildren, Jean, Peter, Don (Audrey), and Tom (LeeAnne) and her grandchildren Mary Elms (Mike), Chris Fahie (Kari), Kelsey Fahie and Ali Fahie; greatgrandchildren Rachel and Megan Elms, Alexa and Ella Fahie, as well as many nieces and nephews whose frequent visits were a highlight to Betty.
Daughter of a coal miner and his wife who emigrated from Europe, Betty spent many happy years in Springhill and at the beach home in Pugwash. She was employed by the Chronicle Herald and later became an executive secretary at the Bank of Montreal until she met the love of her life, Don, whom she married in 1969. Taking over the duties of mother to Don's four children, they lived a very happy life in Halifax until Don's passing in 1997. She continued to live in the family home until her passing. Throughout their time together, they enjoyed travelling, auctions, and the collection of antiques.
Betty was a kind and generous soul who loved being involved with her family, her church (Edgewood Oxford United), visits from family and friends, playing cribbage and visits to the cottage. Betty enjoyed cooking, baking and was intrigued by trying new recipes. Fabulous at knitting and crocheting, her family were always the eager recipients of her handiwork. She was an instructor in secretarial English for Halifax Continuing Education where she met our father. Always aware of clothing styles, she showed her fashion panache throughout her life. She took a keen interest in the sporting endeavours of her children and grandchildren, cheering them on at many a venue. She had wonderful and caring people in her life such as Sue Venoit, Elinor Plowman, neighbours Calvin McInnis, Gwen Taylor and Don Donohue. A strong, independent woman, she was before her time and was a role model for us all.
During her last 3 years she was well taken care of by At Home Homecare and her special companions, Joy White and Mary Corbin, who were so kind and respectful to her and allowed her to maintain her dignity and independence.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held at the A H Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361) on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at 2:00 pm with The Reverend Wayne McCarther officiating. Burial to take place in Hillside Cemetery, Springhill.
