STOTHART, CHARLES DAVID
Son of the late George Gilmour and the late Annie Isobel Stothart, born in Newcastle N.B. on December 12, 1924 and passed peacefully with his family by his side in Ottawa on June, 2, 2016 at the age of 91.
David was the loving husband of his much adored wife of 69 years, Patricia (née Ritchie). Cherished father of five treasured children, Art (Sylvie), Judy (Gary Berner), Ritchie (Mae), Janet (Robert Moriartey) and the late Paul (Karen). He will be fondly remembered by his twelve grandchildren.
David was an exceptional student, scholar and athlete throughout high school and during his tenure at the University of New Brunswick, graduating with a B.Sc in Engineering in 1947. He also received Diplomas in Coastal Engineering from Princeton and Delft, Netherlands. He received the Governor General’s Medal of Highest Provincial Achievement in mathematics and is an inductee of the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame. Dave was an enthusiastic fan of the Carleton University Ravens basketball dynasty. Upon retirement he pursued and achieved a Bachelor of Law Degree from Carleton University in 2000 at the age of 76!
A veteran of World War II, David in his second year of engineering at UNB put his studies on hold and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He served his country from October 1942 until December 1944.
He was a professional engineer who celebrated a successful career as Director of the Public Service Commission of the Federal Government of Canada. Subsequently, he was awarded the Government of Canada Service Centennial Medal. He also had great success at the bridge table. Dave was an A.C.B.L. district representative to the North American Open Pairs in Fresno, California in 1980 & in Buffalo, New York in 1988, and represented Canada at the 1986 World Pairs Olympiad in Miami.
Family and Friends are invited to gather at the Hall of Colours of the Beechwood National Memorial Centre, 280 Beechwood Ave. (east of Vanier Parkway) Thursday June 9th after 9 a.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Sacred Space at 11 a.m. with Reverend Jenni Leslie presiding. Reception to follow in the Borden & Fleming Suites. In memoriam donations to the Bruyère Foundation appreciated.
David was a truly accomplished, humble, talented man, a devoted husband, wonderful father and loyal friend who will be missed by many.
