Bernie Smith

SMITH, BERNIE (DONOHUE)
1933–2016
Bernie (Mary Theresa Bernadine Donohue) Smith passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at her residence surrounded by her loving daughters at the age of 83. Born in Blackville, NB, Bernie was the daughter of the late Weldon and Hannah (Hallihan) Donohue.

She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who lost a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis and leukemia. Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God and the love and prayers of family, friends and many special supporters carried her through.

Words are unable to express our great sorrow and loss. We thank the Extra Mural for their support in fulfilling her wish to be at home. Our Mother was truly amazing – she stayed at home and raised her daughters with much love and care. We will always remember her presence in our home. You may have had the opportunity to meet Bernie at the Lindon Recreation Bingo which she managed for many years. She enjoyed this time as she was able to meet new people and welcome back the regulars every Monday and Saturday night. She had been a member of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada for over 30 years. In more recent years, Bernie was more confined with the limitations of 24 hour oxygen. But she continued to cherish her time with her family, she also enjoyed her line up of favorite shows and looking forward to her treats from Dixie Lee and Estey’s fish and chips to have with her drink of choice: Pepsi!

Throughout her life she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that left a beautiful stamp on the hearts of so many. One in particular, that of her late beloved husband Burton.
Married for 49 years, they raised three daughters: Deborah Lawton (Kevin), Susan Raid (Tony) all of Saint John, NB and Karen Washburn (Chris) of Newcastle, NB. Proud and special Grandmother to nine grandchildren: Courtney, Anna, Claire, Cole, Ryan, Jack, Kyle, Thomas and Frank. She is survived by her sister Mary Underhill of Toronto, Ont, brother Joseph Donohue (Marion) of Howards, NB and many special nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband and parents she was predeceased by a sister Christine Harper and by two brothers: Raymond and James.

Visitation will be held at Bell’s Funeral Home, 651 King George Highway, Miramichi, on Monday, June 13th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Newcastle on Tuesday, June 14th at 2 PM with Father Tom Fowler officiating. Burial will take place in the Miramichi Cemetery.

As expressions of sympathy, in Bernie’s memory, donations may be made to the Extra Mural Program for Training Education.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bell’s Funeral Home, 651 King George Highway, Miramichi NB, E1V 1N9. Telephone: 622–3600. Messages of condolence may be sent at:
