Nora Staraj

Passed on: June 6th, 2016

Nora Helen Staraj (nee Mickey)
Nora was born September 24, 1943 in Shaunavon to Irene and Alex Mickey. She was the youngest of 4 children. At the tender age of 2, her parents separated and Nora and her sister Doreen were sent to live with an aunt and uncle (Clara & Hunter Symington), south of Shaunavon, who raised the girls. Nora attended Power Mine Country School in her early years and then to high school in Shaunavon. In 1959 she met her soul mate Mario Daniel (Joe), a Croatian Immigrant and the 2 were married in 1960. Together they happily raised 3 daughters. Nora’s most important roles in life were those of wife & mother, but she was also an incredibly talented woman in many other areas and displayed her creativity throughout her home. She could do just about anything and do it well. She was a seamstress, artist, chef and bookkeeper. She was an eloquent writer and speaker and she possessed a beautiful singing voice. Many people were entertained by her humorous skits and songs performed at meetings, socials and family gatherings. Her talents are too numerous to list. Nora was also very involved with her church and was a long time member of the CWL. She held the position of Funeral Liturgy Co-ordinator for years, a job she loved and performed with skill and compassion. A few short years ago Nora was diagnosed with Alzheimers. Joe lovingly cared for her at home until December 2015 when she was placed in long term care. On June 6, 2016, at the age of 72, she passed peacefully. She was predeceased by her parents and brother Don as well as several aunts and uncles. She is survived by her devoted husband Joe; daughters Phyllis (Tim) Haubrich of Saskatoon, Ann (Brian) Ladouceur of Pennant, and Michelle (Bill) Aldag of Swift Current, nephew Bruno (Marilou) Suplina of Edmonton and their boys Ivan & Adrian; 8 grandchildren Taylor, Avery, Ian (Melissa), Danielle (Kevin), Christina (Mark), Mario (Chantelle), Paige, and Cody; 1 great grandchild Ayden; hers sisters Eileen (Garry) Mickey-Pex of Calgary, Doreen Mickey of Shaunavon, sister-in-law Carole Esau of Fort St. John, BC; as well as many nieces and nephews. Nora will forever be missed and loved by her family and many close, dear friends. Funeral Services were held on Friday, June 10, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. from Christ the King R.C. Church in Shaunavon with Reverend Father John Mock officiating. The eulogy was presented by Ann Ladouceur.
