Toms, Mina Elizabeth, aged 90, Victoria, BC passed peacefully away on June 12, 2016. Born in Green’s Harbour, NL, August 24, 1925, she was the daughter of Gladys (nee Reid) and William March. After attending Normal School at Memorial University College in the 1940s, Betty taught school in Grand Bank, Windsor, and La Scie, where she met and married Arthur William Toms (deceased) and raised four children. Betty was a keen knitter and an industrial-level preserver, bottling berries and vegetables for the non-growing seasons. When the youngest started school, Betty returned to teaching, and taught kindergarten with passion for the next 20 years. With deteriorating mobility, she took early retirement in 1984. The Newfoundland Teachers Association recognized her contribution, awarding her an Honourable Retirement & Life Membership for her “24 years of dedicated service to the cause of education in this Province…” She moved closer to her children, first to Carleton Place, Ontario, and then to Victoria, BC. As her health declined, Betty moved into Saanich Peninsula ECU where she spent the last 12 years of her life. She knitted sweaters for the local gift shop, staff and friends, tested Sudoku puzzles, and was a competitive scrabble player up to the very end. Betty is survived by son Maxwell and wife, Sandra (Carleton Place, ON); daughters, Elaine (Chesterfield, UK) and Karen and husband, David Wright (Victoria, BC); brother, Fraser March and wife, Joan (Whitbourne, NL), as well as five grandchildren: Eric, Christopher, Michael, Amy and Robert; and three great grandchildren: Chanel, Arthur, and Alexander. She was predeceased by husband, Arthur, and son, Larry (survived by wife Allison). The family wishes to thank the staff at Saanich Peninsula ECU for their kindness, support and care to Betty.
