Alexander Dow

Passed on: June 16th, 2016

Alexander Douglas Dow was born on the farm just south of Keeler on March 18, 1918, second son of Harry and Janet Dow. Predeceased by his parents and brothers Leslie and Harry, he is survived by his wife Jeannette, son Ken and family, Janet and Liam; and son Ian and Joan, and family Kael, Burke and Elizabeth; sister Maisie Black of Ottawa; nieces, nephews and cousins in Scotland. Doug farmed with his Dad – with horses – before the War. He joined the RCAF and served with 408 Squadron as an aeromechanic on Lancasters. He bought land on his return and married Jeannette Ball in 1955. Doug was a member of the Golden Acres Machinery Co-op and they took off 20 crops together. Through the years he served his community on school and church boards, the Wheat Pool committee, 4H light horse, woodworking, and automotive projects, and a councillor for Division 4 RM of Marquis. The move to Moose Jaw was in 1985, but as Doug’s sons were farming, he didn’t really retire. At age 80, when Ken had a job, Doug did the swathing at Keeler. Doug and Jeannette enjoyed some travel: Expo 67 and then on to Scotland with their sons; camping each summer with Crofts and Youngs; trips to curling events; and reunions with 408 Squadron. Doug enjoyed good health through the years. On April 29 he fell at home and broke his hip. We are thankful for the good care and kindness received in hospital, Pioneer Lodge, and Extendicare before his death on June 16. The Celebration of Doug’s life will take place at Zion United Church on Wednesday June 22, 2016 at 2:00 pm. Reverend Doug Hallman will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Sukanen Ship Museum, Box 2071, Moose Jaw, S6H 7T2, or the charity of your choice. In living memory of Doug, a memorial planting will be made by W. J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Please sign the memorial register at website: www.wjjonesandson.com (Obituaries).
