HICKS, GUPTILL
It is with sadness the family of Guptill F. Hicks, husband of the late Marjorie (Wood) Hicks, announce his passing which occurred at Ridgewood Veterans Wing, Saint John, NB on Monday, June 27, 2016. He was born on July 22, 1925 in Midge, NB, the son of the late Hedley and Ida (Fillmore) Hicks.
A beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, Guptill enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. The early years were spent at Hicks’ Beach where everyone was welcome. In later years Marjorie and Guptill travelled throughout Canada and the US with their motorhome. They were proud members of the Perfect Circle Chapter of F.M.C.A.. After travelling became too much, they went back to Hicks' Beach. Guptill’s first job was working for KC Irving where he constructed all the garages in NFLD in the early 50s. When his father took sick, Guptill came home to operate HH Hicks and Sons, a supply and construction company in Sackville for sixteen years. Due to health reason, Guptill closed the business and went to work for Department of Veterans Affairs for twelve years and then a Division Property Manager J Division for the RCMP for twelve years, retiring in 1991. His last building was the construction of J Division Headquarters in Fredericton NB. He was a member of the Sackville Branch 26, R.C.L.
Guptill is survived by one daughter; Susan Herrington (Grant) of Toronto, ON, two sons; Hugh (Kathleen) of Tavistock, ON, Gary (Nancy) of Quispamsis and one brother Cecil Hicks (Vivien) of Sackville, NB.
Guptill was predeceased by three sisters, Hilda (John) Brooks, of Springhill, NS, Sylvia (Bustard) Valade, of North Grosvenordale, CO, and Glenara Anderson (Charles) of Sackville, NB; two brothers Kenneth Hicks (Ruby) of Moncton, NB and Howard (Edith) of Sackville, NB; seven grandchildren, Maxwell, Taylor, Gregory, Katie, Jared, Lindy and Sarah; four great grandchildren, Henry, Thomas, Lucy and Gabriel; and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements for Guptill are under the care of Reid’s Funeral Home (506–832–5541), Hampton, NB. He is resting at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Rd., Quispamsis, NB, with visitation on June 30 from 5 to 8 PM. Funeral service, conducted by Rev. John Martin, will be held from the Chapel at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home at 1:00 PM, on July 2, 2016. Interment will take place at Ocean View Memorial Gardens at a later date.
The family would like to extend their appreciation for the exceptional level of care at Ridgewood Veterans Wing.
