LORETTA YVONNE SKLAR
1920-2016
Loretta Yvonne Sklar (nee Craig) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 13 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. Loretta was born at the family home in the Marcelin district on Boxing Day, 1920. She is survived by son Brian (Trudy), daughters Beverly (Steve Thackray) Sklar, Anita (Dale) Despins; grandchildren Aaron (Lindsey) Sklar, Damon (Adrienne) Sklar, Jennifer Smith, Alyssa (Rob Kostyk) Despins, Amy (Matt Ward) Despins, great grandchildren Jordan Harrison, Talan and Oliver Ward, and Porter and Paisley Sklar, and brother Alan (Denise) Craig and sister Olive Hille. She was predeceased by her husband, John Sklar, parents Wilford (Bill) Craig and Blanche (Dagenais) Craig, brothers Raymond (Pat), Victor (Ida), Wilfred (Madge), Leonard (Alice), George (Kathleen), and Leo (Cecilia), and sisters Jean (Hendrick) Despins, Alice (Roddy) Crawford, Rita (Fred) Perasso, and Diana (Roy) Nesdoly. She was also predeceased by two infant siblings, Anita, and Edward. Loretta left home at 13, boarding a train to Winnipeg, where she worked as a housekeeper. She then worked as “Rosie the Riveter” on Gypsy Moths at the “M&C” in Prince Albert for a short time during WW2, then at MacLeod’s. She married John Sklar on June 18, 1945. She finished her grade 12 at the age of 60…one of her proudest achievements. After her three children graduated, Loretta worked as a TV rental agent at the Victoria Union Hospital in Prince Albert. In 1986, Loretta and John moved to Saskatoon, where she resided until her passing. Loretta was active in the Catholic Women’s League and in her parish, first at the Sacred Heart Cathedral and then at St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish in Prince Albert. She also volunteered at Pineview Terrace seniors home in Prince Albert for over fifteen years, where her mother, Blanche spent her golden years. The family wishes to thank the staff at Royal University Hospital for their excellent care. They also want to express their gratitude to Betty Sandulak and her staff at Betty’s Care Home in Saskatoon for their loving care over the past two years. Memorial donations can be made to individuals’ charity of choice. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, 114 Kingsmere Place, Saskatoon with celebrant, Rev. Fr. Charles Nweze.
