Helen May Parsons

Passed on: July 14th, 2016

It is with deep sadness that we, the family of the late Helen May (Denby) Parsons, announce the passing of our mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother on July 14, 2016, surrounded by her loving family after a long fight with C.O.P.D.
Mom will be deeply missed by her daughter, Helen (Nick, her favorite son-in-law) Parpoulas, Mira Gut; son, James (Lesley); son, Richard and son, Leslie (Rose), all of Ontario; her precious grandchildren, Leslie (Nicole), Christopher (Gayle) and Justin, all of Ontario, as well as her granddaughter, Nicole (Jason, who mom nicknamed Smiley) and grandson, Michael (her Mikie) at home and great-grandchildren, Ethan and Riley Breton Parsons, Ontario. Helen is also survived by her sister, Camilla ‘Pam’ of Sussex, England and sister-in-law, Millie Parsons of Louisbourg and Myrna Steele of Sydney along with many nieces and nephews around the world.
Besides her parents, Isaac George Denby and Esther Louise (Goodhall) Denby, she was predeceased by her loving husband Jim of 69 years; a daughter, Doreen in infancy, her brother, Richard.
Mom was a war bride and met her husband in 1942. Mom was working as a kitchen maid for the ex-prime minister of Canada R. B. Bennett when she met dad at the age of 14 and two years later just before D Day they were married on April 29, 1944.
Helen came to Canada in 1946 and just celebrated 70 years in Canada on Queen Victoria Day. Mom and Dad moved to Scatarie Island where they ran the lighthouse and had two children, before moving to Mira and having another son.
In 1953, Mom and Dad moved to Toronto, having two daughters there, looking for a better life and lived there until dad's retirement in 1980 when they settled back in Mira. Mom loved to knit and go to bingo and loved to have her family around her. We know our mom is smiling now because she is with the love of her life and they are together forever again.
Visitation for the late Helen Parsons will be held Sunday, July 17, 2016 7-9 p.m. and Monday, July 18, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. A celebration of life will take place 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2016 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Reg MacDonald officiating. Interment to follow in Loch End Cemetery, Catalone.
Donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association or the Loch End Cemetery.
