It is with broken hearts that we, the family of Allan Wayne Clements ‘Pops’, announce the sudden passing of our very special father, grandfather and brother. Allan slipped away peacefully at his home in Calgary, Alta. on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at the age of 56.
Born on April 10, 1960 in Sydney, Allan was the son of the late Wallace and Ina (Hamilton) Clements.
He will be dearly missed by daughters, Tammy (Brad Sibley), Amanda (Patty Rice) and Karry (Marlon Beairsto) and son, Shane; grandchildren, Samantha Dalton, Amie Dalton, Stephine Dalton, Ethan Dalton, Bailee Clements; Whitney Clements, Tristen Clements, Haileigh Rice-Clements; Damien Macneill, Lila Macneill, Rory Macneill, Dominic Macneill. Allan is also survived by loving siblings, Marion Mullins, Howie Centre, Eileen Apblett, Prince Edward Island, Wallace (Helen Davidson) Clements, Halifax, sister-in-law, Marnie Clements, Sydney, Karen Belford, New York, Charlene (James) Murray, Cornwallis, Raymond (Johann Deveaux) Clements, Sydney, Marilyn (Patrick Corbett) Clements, North Sydney, Edward (Ronald Osowski) Clements, Halifax, Sharon (David) Bonwick, Winnipeg, Donald (Brenda Farrell) Clements, Sydney, and many caring nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Allan was predeceased by his sister, JoanMay in infancy and his brothers, Harold and Bill; brothers-in-law, Cecil, Jack and Doug and sister-in-law, Susan.
One of the first jobs Allan had was at Smiths’ Bakery on Prince Street as a stock person. Over the years he had many different types of jobs such as working in a nickel mine, stocking furniture in a warehouse, meat cutter in many grocery stores and butcher shops, various grant projects, mechanics’ helper, truck driver, drywall installer, taxi driver, self-appointed Cape Breton tour guide and finally he became a chef. This is when he discovered his passion for baking and his baked goods were always in demand. His working career had come full circle he may have started as a stock person in a bakery but he ended as a baker.
As a young boy Allan was an avid collector of hockey cards and loved to trade them in his goal to have the best collection ever. Years later he also collected pins, which he traded on the international market while at the 1988 Olympics in Korea. In his early teens he discovered arcade machines and he was hooked. There was always a competition for the highest score which he became obsessed with and challenged anybody and everybody. Later in life he found playing cards to be very rewarding, especially while sharing a few beers with some friends, and maybe from time to time a little bet was placed. He loved going to the casino and playing the slot machines. He enjoyed fishing and watching television, mostly the history, movie, and comedy channels. His favourite pastime was exploring second hand stores and flea markets for things he called treasures.
Allan was the type of man who cared deeply about people and freely gave his help and love to anyone who needed it and he never asked for anything in return. Family was very important to Allan and he loved family gatherings the most. Sometimes those gatherings brought together family members that did not always see eye to eye but Allan would always say that it didn’t matter we were family and so we needed to love one another. His kindness and laughter was infectious. He could be quite the joker from time to time and he was excellent at keeping a straight face until that little smirk would start to show on the side of his mouth and then you just knew that he got one over on you again. That is what Allan’s life was all about, being with family and friends, sharing laughter and good times, and showing how much he loved and cared for others. He will be greatly missed by many.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Allan’s life will be held on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 2 p.m. at S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. A reception will be held at the funeral home following the service.
A private interment will take place at a later date.
