Phyllis Amelia Saunders (nee Kean)

Passed on: July 16th, 2016

It is with great sadness that we share the sudden passing of Phyllis Amelia Saunders (nee Kean) peacefully and surrounded by family at the Health Sciences Complex in the Intensive Care Unit on Saturday, July 16th, 2016. She was 86 years young. Predeceased by her infant daughter Marguerite; father Robert Kean; mother Harriett Kean (nee Stroud); sisters: Frances Greening (Norman), Rita Arnold (Dolphe); and brothers: Charles (Greta) and Wallace Kean. Leaving to mourn a loving husband Howard, her partner in life and best friend. Also her loving children: Jacqueline Nield (Brian), Barb Pelger (Ed), Sharon Stratton (Lorne), Howard Saunders and Kimberley Saunders. She will be sadly missed by her four grandsons: Job and Ben Pelger, and Patrick (Rebecca) and Chris (Robyn) Stratton. Also her brothers: Ed Kean (Phoebe) and Max Kean (Emma); and sister Pauline Carter. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews, an extended family and a wide circle of friends, especially those in Traytown, Glovertown and Gander. A special acknowledgement for all the years of support and friendship to the Riggs family (Clarence, Marguerite, Evelyn, Phil and Lyla); her loving niece Paula and husband George Gobi; and sisters-in-law: Phyllis Eastman (Saunders), Ethel Fogwill (Saunders), Betty Dionne (Saunders), Clarice Saunders (Noftall) and Irene Kean; and Aunt Mildred Stroud. To her last hours she was a vibrant and loving woman. She had an adventurous spirit, was kind hearted and lived a full and active life. She loved to travel with her husband and family members. For many years she enjoyed treasured times "up the river" with close family and friends. She was devoted to her family, an avid gardener, thrived on helping others and loved a game of cards and sing-songs. She had a kind heart and knew instinctively what to do to make others happy. It could be baking a cake, sewing a bit of clothes, knitting a pair of socks, bringing of jam or pickles or, a pot of homemade soup. The family would like to thank the ER and ICU Staff at the Health Sciences Complex for their personal and professional care. Howard and his children would also like to thank the Staff at the Caribou Veterans Pavilion for their support and care, many kindnesses and words of condolence during this time. A small family funeral service was held on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at 2 pm in the Chapel at Barrett's Funeral Home on 328 Hamilton Avenue, St. John's, NL, with a reception following at Barrett's Reception Centre. A memorial service will be held in Phyllis' honour at 3 pm on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at St. Edward's Anglican Church in Glovertown, with a reception to follow in the church hall. All who knew her are invited to attend, to celebrate her life and share their stories. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Phyllis' memory to the Ken Diamond Memorial Park, care of the Glovertown Town Council.
