Stephen Ridgway

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our Son, Brother and Uncle Steve.
Steve was born July 19, 1960 and lived his early life in Northport. After college in Cape Breton, he moved to Halifax for 5 or 6 years and entertained people there, before moving back to Amherst to be closer to his family.
Steve was a very loving and caring person to all who knew him, and would give them the shirt off his back if they needed it, or a sympathetic ear to listen to their problems. He had a fair amount of them himself, but would always put his aside in order to listen and try to help others.
Steve was involved with the Amherst Legion for over 30 years in one form or another, and had recently been the President for a short time.
He was well known for his musical talents and abilities and has entertained thousands of people at the Legion’s Hootenannies for many, many years.
He had also been involved with raising money for many charities, and has played for numerous benefits in order to help people in need.
Steve also loved to play at Dick’s Jamboree and through them was also involved with the Bridge Workshop, which brought joy to both Steve and the clients of the Bridge as well as surrounding clients from the county.
Steve enjoyed playing his music and entertaining people, he was definitely a people person and loved hanging out with family and friends. One of his other great pleasures was beating his Mom and Sister at “words with friends”. Don’t worry Steve, we’ll resign the games in progress so as not to ruin your winning streak. Anyone who was close to Steve would know how very talented he was with the use of words as well, and could be witty beyond belief, with a vast amount of sarcasm thrown in . He loved to laugh and to get other to join him. He often had his family and friends in stitches with his stories. We know that there are a great number of Steve’s friends that are hurting as we are. He was one of the good guys and will never be forgotten.
Steve is survived by his mother Joyce Porter, Step father Gary Porter of Amherst, sisters Kathy (Jeff) of Amherst, Wendy Smiley (Mark) of Port Howe, two nephews Derrick Smiley (Veronica) of Ottawa, ON, Corey Pettipas of Vistoria, BC, his favorite niece Stefanie Gilkie (Brad) and the newest member of the family, his great niece Avery Lee of Halifax.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Steve on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at 3 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, LaPlanche Street, Amherst.
If people wish, donations may be made in Steve’s memory to the Amherst Legion, The Bridge Workshop or the charity of your choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Campbell’s Funeral Home, Amherst, NS (902-667-9906)
