SMITH, Violet (MacDonald) 1923 - 2016

In Halifax, April 27, daughter of Sarah Jane (MacIntyre) MacPherson, D.1972 and John Archibald MacDonald, 1963; Birch Grove, Cape Breton. She was the last member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by sisters, Sadie (Bub) Frank, 1990; Marcella King, 2005; Mary David, 2009; Pearl MacDonald, 1993; Reta Turnbull, 1997; and brothers: John Arthur, 2002; Ramsay, 1953; and Ralph, 1927. She was also predeceased by half-brothers Malcolm (Max) MacPherson, 1990 and Allan MacPherson, 1970; and half-sister Nora Rogers, 1999.
Vi arrived in Halifax from Cape Breton during WW II and had lived in the city since. She enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force Women's Division (WD's) in 1942, received training at Manning Depot #7 Rockcliff, before returning to Halifax where she undertook military office assignments. Following the war she married Linden (D. 2011) and raised Patricia Smith (Bob Mackie); Allan (Marcie); Colin (Glenna Thornhill); David (Judy MacMullin); Janie (Bill) Barakett; Margaret (David) Fountain; John Alex (Sherry); and Carolyn Smith (Alan Chisholm).
She is survived by grandchildren: Anne (James) Baughan, Stephen (Erin) Burgess; Tristan (Emily) Smith; Lesley Smith (Brenden Sommerhalder); Laird and Siubhan Smith; David Barakett (Virginie Rouleau) and Elise Barakett; Gwyneth Fountain; James Smith (Kyley Schofield); Kaleigh, and Holly Smith; Amy Chisholm, Lauren and Christian Cunningham. Vi also had six great-grandchildren: Sarah, Matthew, and Hannah Baughan; Evan Burgess; Alasdair Smith and Addison Barakett. Vi is also remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews.
After retiring from provincial office duties at the Victoria General Hospital Vi traveled, knit, read, and contributed to the Mission-for-Seamen. She was active for many years in Toastmistresses enjoying the many friends in her club, their travels, and most notably, the speeches in New Zealand. She completed the Coast-to-Coast hiking trail across England when she was 86.
A private family memorial and reception was held April 30, 2016. Cremation has taken place. A graveside Committal Service will occur 2:00 pm, August 27, 2016 at Black Brook Cemetery, Port Morien, Cape Breton. Family and friends are invited to attend a reception from 12 noon to 1:30 pm at Birch Grove Fire Hall prior to the graveside committal of ashes.
