Marjorie Wharton Marjorie Wharton

Passed on: August 11th, 2016

Marjorie Belle Wharton (nee Packham) passed away peacefully on August 11th, 2016 at Cypress House in Swift Current, SK with family by her side. Marj was born on June 30, 1930 to Herman & Florence Packham. She and her older brother, Ronald, were raised on a dairy farm near Niagara Falls. She married her late husband of 57 years, James R. Wharton on April 14, 1951. Jim once said that Marj was his hero for leaving her home and family to move out West with him. After attending Millar College of the Bible in Pambrun, SK they spent most of their married life on a farm near Vanguard, SK. After retiring in 1989, they moved to Swift Current, SK. Marj was a modern pioneer woman and a traditional farm wife who had a huge garden, kept chickens, milked cows and goats, hauled grain, and brought meals to the fields, all between cooking and baking for her eight children and their friends, hosting the local Bible School students and numerous other visitors, sewing clothes and figure skating costumes, decorating cakes, doing a variety of handcrafts and hobbies, curling and playing board games, particularly crokinole and scrabble. Intertwined in her busy days was her ongoing commitment to her faith. By living her beliefs daily in the home, she taught her family the importance of prayer, daily devotions and supporting missions. She enjoyed being a part of Bible studies and other church events. Marj demonstrated her incredible strength by recovering from a near fatal car accident in 1990, that resulted in a severe head injury, and her family feels blessed to have had these extra 26 years with her. Marj leaves to mourn her children, Richard (Norma) Wharton, Saskatoon, SK, Beverley (Steve) Kelly, Airdrie, AB, Sharon (Bill) Blinn, Beaumont, AB, Ross Wharton, Rocky View, AB, Nancy (Myron) Powers, Leduc County, AB, Melody (Albert) Janzen, Rosenhof, SK, and Janine (Bob) Rempel, Rhineland, SK; her son-in-law, Henry Goertzen; her grandchildren, Trina Mae Johnson, Kayla, Tiffany, and Talita Wharton, Jonathan (Kristen) Bailey, Janelle (Lincoln) Scrimgeour, Nevada Blinn, Joshua and Jayson Powers, Ashley (Jason) Falk, Nathan, Dustin, and Mattaus Janzen, Britney and McKinley Rempel; and by her great-granddaughter, Eden Bailey. She was predeceased by her husband, Jim Wharton; her eldest daughter, Donna Goertzen; her parents, Herman & Florence Packham; and by her brother, Ronald (Muriel) Packham. The Internment Service was held on Monday, August 15th, 2016, at 1:30 pm at the Burton Cemetery in Vanguard, SK, with Pastor Rob Cochrane and Pastor Josiah Boyd officiating. The Funeral Service was held at 4:00 from the Church of the Open Bible, Swift Current, SK, with Pastor Rob officiating. Deepest appreciation is also extended to Minnie Rempel, who was not only Mom’s faithful friend in recent years, but who also delivered exceptional care and comfort to Mom in her final days, and provided support to the family during Mom’s passing and in the challenging days both before and after.
