Joan MacKenzie

Joan Carmel Mackenzie (Nearing) RN passed away peacefully at home in Dominion on August 27, 2016. Joan was a daughter of James and Clara MacKenzie of New Waterford. She graduated from New Waterford School of Nursing in 1956 and practiced her craft for 35 years with the majority at St. Joseph’s hospital in Glace Bay. Known for her high energy, compassionate patient care and perfectionist attitude at work, Joan was both respected and admired. She was predeceased by her brothers, William, Melvin, Rev. Gerald MacKenzie and sister, Nora MacNeil.
Joan is survived by her children, Jamie MacKenzie (Krista), Brent (Sandra), Gary and Jennifer Nearing as well as her grandchildren, Emily and Jamie MacKenzie, Brittany Shepard, Ryan Nearing as well as nieces, Heather Ferguson, Cindy Power and nephews, Bruce, Curt and Michael MacKenzie.
Mom lived her life with boundless energy, without apology and always lived life her way and greatly valued her independence. She approached everything with a can-do attitude and defended her loved ones like a mama bear. Mom, you will be forever in our hearts and thoughts and we will always carry forward the eternal gifts you have given us.
Services for Joan will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, September 2, at McLellan Brother Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave, New Waterford followed by burial service at Mount Carmel Cemetery where Joan will be laid to rest with her family.
