It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that we the family announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and brother, Francis Whelan on Monday August 29, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney surrounded by his loving family. Born in Colliers, Conception Bay, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Gertrude (Murphy) Whelan. Francis was employed with the federal government until his retirement, then for his wife, Noreen, he purchased Hole Lotta Subs for their 25th wedding anniversary. He was the backbone of the business being involved in all of the daily routines. He was a hard worker who enjoyed puttering around the yard. He loved spending time with his precious grandchildren and countless evenings enjoying family dinners and conversations around the table. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Francis is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 52 years, Noreen (Conway); his children, Wendy (Kent) Lewis, Wanda (Donald) MacKinnon, Troy Whelan; his four precious grandchildren, Tanner and Tessa MacKinnon, Dawson and Leyton Whelan. He is also survived by his siblings, Mary (Eddie) Edmonds, Helen (Stan) McHugh, Betty (Bill) Wall; many nieces and nephews; special neighbor and friend Andy Pitman as well as the extended Conway family. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers and sisters. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held 11 a.m. Friday, September 2,2016 at Our Lady of Fatima Parish with Father Duaine Deveraux officiating.
