It is with broken hearts, that we the family of Stephen O’Leary announce his passing on September 15,2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Steve was born on May 15,1954 in Sydney, he was the son of the late Mary (Wowk) and Daniel O’Leary. Steve loved the outdoors and his biggest passion was fishing and always trying for the ‘big one”. Steve first worked at the Sydney Steel Plant, then for 24 years he was a proud Cape Breton coal miner in Lingan and enjoyed his friendships made with his many co-workers. After the coal mine he was employed for 12 years in Fort McMurray but his heart was in Cape Breton. Steve is survived by his son, Stephen (Rhonda) and daughter Terri-Lynn both of Halifax, his former wife, Theresa (Hall) O'Leary. He was grandpa to Rebecca, Aidan and Alexis. Also surviving are his sisters, Mary Jane, Sydney, Patti (Don) Hume and Donna Corbett, B.C., Valerie, Fort McMurry, Kathy, Halifax, brothers, Tom, Toronto, and Shawn (Peggy), Sydney, as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Josie and Loretta, brother, Fred, sister-in-law, Lena O’Leary and partner Pauline Dilney Mackinnon. Steve’s family would like to sincerely thank the doctors, nurses, volunteers and VON for their exceptional care given to Steve during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit, CBRH. Cremation has taken place.
Funeral service will be held on Monday Sept 19, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating.
