Gertrude Elizabeth Smith, 86, of Amherst passed away suddenly on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the Halifax Infirmary. Born in Shinimicas, Gertie was a daughter of the late Wilson and Edna (Johnson) Smith.
Gertie had been Assistant Manager at Eaton's and Sears. She was a member of Trinity St. Stephens United Church and UCW. She and her husband of sixty-five years, Kenneth, enjoyed camping and traveling to many Bluegrass festivals and shows. She was an avid card player.
Gertie had a passion for her family, especially her grandchildren.
She will be dearly missed by her husband, Kenneth, Amherst; her daughter, Marilyn (Kenny) Peters, Souris, PE; her son, Steve (Michelle McManaman), Amherst; four grandchildren, Brad (Becky) Peters, Janice (Andrew) Peters Gibson, Jennifer Peters, and Abbie Smith; five step-grandchildren, Teri, Angie, Jamie, Nickie, and Julie; one great granddaughter, Celeste Gibson; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Smith and Elsie Wilson, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Gertie was predeceased by her infant daughter, Janice Lynn; grandson, Philip Peters; four brothers, Leon, Raymond, Hilton, and Ansel; seven sisters, Gwen, Leona, Reta, Flo, Shirley, Bernice, and Audrey who followed Gertie to heaven just four hours after.
Arrangements are under the care and guidance of Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church Street, Amherst (902-667-8777) from where family and friends are invited to a time of visitation on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 from 6-8 pm. A funeral service for Gertie will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 2 pm. Interment to follow in the Amherst Cemetery.
Donations in memory of Gertie may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
