It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Susan (Gillis) MacNeil on October 5, 2016 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Susan was born in Big Intervale on October 2, 1928 to the late Mary (Daisley) and Kenneth Gillis. She lived in Bay Road Valley then moved to Sydney with her husband DJ.
She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Sydney River. Susan was an avid card player and loved to knit and crochet. She was also very happy in the strawberry patch. She loved her family, especially family gatherings. Christmas was not Christmas unless you were at Susie’s home with loads of food and good cheer. You could always expect to get a cup of tea and some of her home made goodies. She loved her cat, Marbles. Susan is survived by her daughters, Christine (Len) Briand, Ben Eion, Gale (Jr.) Ranni, Sydney; sons, Sidney (Joan), Sydney Mines, Darryl (Barb), Ontario, Glen (Tracy), Sydney, Lee (Terri), Toronto; daughter-in-law, Christine MacNeil, St. Margaret’s Village. She is also survived by her wonderful grandchildren, Tracy, Derek, Leah, Kerry, Miranda, Heather, Halie, Ryan, Matthew, Corey, Erin, Colin, Leeann and Jessie; her precious 18 great grandchildren; niece, Sharon MacNeil; nephews, Shane MacNeil and Wesley Gillis as well as good friends, Glenn Stevens and Carol MacNeil.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Donald “DJ”; son, Donnie; brothers, Hector “Buddy” and Stewart; sister, Lillian MacNeil.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Palliative Care Unit for all their care and compassion given to mom during her illness. A special thank you to Dr. Paul Murphy for the excellent care given to Susan through her lifetime. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, October 7, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. A memorial mass will take place 11 a.m. Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Our Lady of Fatima Parish with Fr. Duaine Devereaux officiating. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
