Sister Mary Edna Pertus, died peacefully on Sunday, October 9, 2016, at the CND Health Care Centre, Sydney. Born in Poulamond, Richmond County, NS, on April 15, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Charles Pertus and Elizabeth LeBlanc. Sister Mary Edna entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1937 and made profession in Montreal on August 24, 1939. Immediately following profession, Sister Mary Edna was appointed to Mount Saint Bernard College in Antigonish where she began her long career as cook and domestic manager in some of our largest institutions. In 1948, Mary Edna moved to Marianopolis College, Montreal and then, in 1957 she accepted a position at Notre Dame Academy, Staten Island, USA. In 1970, she was appointed to Saint Anthony Convent, Providence, Rhode Island and then to Ridgefield, Connecticut. In all these years Sister Mary Edna was known to excel both as the “hands on” person in the kitchen, as well as the mentor/supervisor for all those with whom she worked.
Sister Mary Edna was a warm and caring person with a delightful sense of humor. These qualities shone forth when, from 1982 until the year 2000, she served as receptionist at our Motherhouse in Montreal.
In 2000, Sister Mary Edna “retired” to the Maritimes, specifically Holy Redeemer Convent in Whitney Pier, where she ministered in countless ways to those who needed her. In 2011, Mary Edna moved to the assisted living facility at Parkland, Sydney, and then to our Health Care Center in 2014. Sister Mary Edna spent many hours in prayer, especially remembering her family, her CND community and her health care givers. We were blessed to have had Mary Edna with us for such a long time and we extend a sincere thank you to those who cared for her so lovingly.
Sister Mary Edna is survived by her sister, Clair Sampson, Samson Cove, NS, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Lillian, Clotilde and Helen and brothers, Clement, Thedee, Alphonse and Armond.
