It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, uncle and friend, Roddie MacNeil on Friday, October 21, 2016, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness.
Born on February 9, 1950 in Sydney, Roddie was the son of the late Benedict ‘Benny’ and Mary (MacKenzie) MacNeil. Family was everything to Roddie, for he was looked up to as a father figure after the passing of his parents. He worked hard most of his life and was last employed at Coxheath Arena as maintenance worker for over 20 years before retiring. Roddie loved to cook. He will be missed by all who knew him. Roddie is survived by his siblings, Crissy (Brad) MacKinley, Tony MacNeil, James (Fay) MacNeil, Gerard MacNeil and Michael D. MacNeil; nephew, Benny, whom Roddie thought of as his own son; as well as other nieces and nephews, Nicole, Krista, Lynn, Christopher and Bradley. Roddie is also survived by lifelong friend, D.J. ‘Deak’ MacKinnon. As per Roddie’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A memorial service for the late Roddie MacNeil will be announced in the newspaper at a later date. Donations in memory of Roddie may be made to Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County or to a charity of your choice.
The family gives a special thank you to Dr. Fraser, Dr. Young, Dr. Aboud, Dr. Hall and nursing staff from E.R. and palliative care unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital for the care given to Roddie during his time of need.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home. Online condolences may be forwarded to the family at www.pierfuneralhome.com.
